5 Crate Training Mistakes Dog Owners Make

Apartment living needs a calm crate routine. The most common mistakes — and how to fix them without stress.
Crate training fails when the crate means isolation and anxiety instead of rest. These five mistakes show up often in apartment consultations.
Mistake 1: Using the crate as punishment. Never send your dog to the crate after unwanted behaviour — it undermines the crate as a safe den.
Mistake 2: Closing the door on day one. Build comfort over 7–10 days: meals inside, short closed-door sessions, then longer rests.
Mistake 3: Wrong size or placement. The crate should allow standing and turning, but not so large that one end becomes a bathroom. Place it in a lived-in area — a quiet corner of the flat — not a closed bathroom with no family contact.
Mistake 4: Skipping exercise first. A tired dog crates calmly. A dog with leftover energy will vocalize and dig.
Mistake 5: Treating crate comfort and alone-time as the same skill. Train them in parallel with short, structured departures.
